If you're looking for a game, I've got one for you. But at first glance it looks like a joke -- the graphics are 8-bit, and it looks like such a simple concept, but fair warning: Don't come crying to me the first night you go without sleep to play. Or skip class. Or take a sick day.

Minecraft -- key elements:
1. Uber ceativity. You craft everything. You get dirt, wood and stone to start with, and from that you can develop tools, fortresses and complex mechanisms -- limited only by your imagination. (In fact, one ubergeek used the available tools to build a working 8-bit ALU inside the game. For laymen like me, that means he built a working computer in the game. It stretched out for a mile, but he had plenty of space because...)

2. The explorable territory in a game world is 8 times the surface area of the Earth. That's true firstly because the game map is huge, but secondly because you can start mining into a cliff or straight down into the ground, bumping into natural caverns, dungeons, waterways... And actually, the Halloween addition of the Nether (Hell) portal means that you have even more to explore.

3. The element of danger. As you let your creative side loose, and you start amassing tools and resources, watch out for the friggin mobs that come out at night. They're dumb as rocks, but somehow more frightening than the L4D undead. Especially the freakin Creepers, who sneak up on your ass and blow the crap out of everything in a 6 meter radius.

This isn't the best example of gameplay -- just something I put together to amuse my kid.

Coe has a long running Let's Play series that would give you a better idea how it all works: http://www.youtube.com/user/Coestar

Check it out... but don't say I didn't warn you.

Edit: Ah yeah, and this might help: http://www.minecraft.net/

Interesting fact: "Notch" (minecraft's developer) has made approximately $9.9 million USD to date (selling minecraft)

Innovation, discovery and creativity, with a hint of danger. On top of the many creative options built into it, you'll soon find you can use the physics and features of the game to do things that weren't actually intended.

If you were ever a fort builder, lego player, tinker toy tinkerer, then you'll get it. If not, you'll be happier grinding.
